MONIQUE SMEETS
Research
Interests:
I have always been interested in all forms of
perception, especially in determinants of and mechanisms involved
in distortedperception. In a clinical context, my work has
focused on understanding body image disturbances in anorexia
nervosa (AN). How is it possible that patients with AN perceive
themselves as fat whereas they are in reality emaciated? Our work
indicates that body image disturbances in AN are not limited to the
visual senses (i.e. seeing or imaging oneself as fat) but extend to
the tactile senses (i.e. perceiving distances on skin as
inappropriately large), and that inappropriate cognitions about own
body size seem to penetrate the visual representation of the
body, making it bigger.
Another one of my interest is related to
olfaction, specifically in how the meaning of odor is shaped by
context and cognition. The sense of smell is very malleable, in
that for example odors that are not offensive may even come to
cause fear and adverse health effects in people who expect to
become ill from these odors. The combining element in these lines
of research is the powerful top-down influence of higher-order
cognition and affect on perception at the elementary
level.
Recently, I have taken up working on the role of
body odors in social communication.
